Avalanche Conditions Report #4 - 20cms of Snow and Warm Temps

We are back with Dave and Backcountry Skiing Canada to deliver you our 4th Avalanche Condition Report of the Season.

  • 20cm of snow fell yesterday and came in with a rapid rise in temperature and created a touchy storm slab and we had a widespread natural and explosive avalanche cycle in Ymir Bowl, 5 Mile, and Catch Basin.
  • The new snow buried a surface hoar layer about 20-40cm down.
  • The snowpack doesn't like rapid change and this new mixture is creating electric conditions.
  • We are in for a couple of days of high pressure, so be cautious of solar aspects as the sun and warm temps can have a dramatic effect on the snow specifically in areas such as Goat Slide, Half Dome, and White Queen.
  • With all the new snow over the past few months, tree wells are a real hazard so please remember to ski with a buddy and give trees a wide birth
  • The December 4th crust is still an area of concern as previous avalanche areas have been reloaded with snow, we can expect to see similar avalanches in those areas so be very cautious of thin shallow rocky start zones.
  • Avalanche Canada is calling the hazard Considerable.
  • Looks like Sunday will be the next hit of precipitation with 5-10cm forecasted.

As always play safe out there!
