Over the past 14 months the new owners of Whitewater have revisited the existing Master Plan, which was developed in 2002 and accepted by the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Arts (MTCA) in 2007. The Master Plan has been amended to include additional housing units, a Hotel and Hostel. The run layout and lift plan was also altered to incorporate the popular Backside and add an additional lift on the face of White Queen. The amendment stayed within the existing Commercial Recreation Area and is now slightly smaller, the final product returning 17.09 hectares to the crown.
The foremost goal during this planning process was to maintain the charm that is Whitewater and not interrupt the support and charisma that the Nelson populace brings to this environment. The residential plans demonstrate more units at a lower density over more terrain than what was originally contemplated. The number of housing units offsets a majority of the costs involved with infrastructure improvements and will be modestly priced to again reflect the base requirement of maintaining charm and not offend the visual mountain experience. The lift additions and improvements add to the already legendary steep snowy terrain, as well supplementary intermediate terrain will complement the family appeal Whitewater affords.
Brent Harley and Associates was selected as the planner, through his intimate knowledge and experience in the British Columbia ski and resort community, the new owners’ vision was realized. The process involved many versions and scales, with feedback from multiple referral agencies and correspondence with the MTCA. Brent’s understanding, patience and personal involvement with this project produced this current version.
The process will take into consideration all aspects of the environment and impact. Whitewater will strive to use local professional services and local business opportunities. A LEED’s (Leadership in Environment and Energy Design) approach will be forefront in all aspects of the development.
Please review the Master Plan with an open mind, see the potential for a congruous relationship to continue at Whitewater with the future home owners and realize that the resorts successful future will depend on continued harmony with all stakeholders’.
