Biding time before the snow flies

Consider experiencing Kaslo Jazz Fest and/or Starbelly Jam. Kootenay Classics.

Ok, Ok... I realize we still have a little time to kill before we can ski. Why not take advantage of some of the cool things happening in our area over the summer—particularly some of the music festivals abounding. For the purpose of this post, I'll stick to two great music fests that are coming up soon.

Starbelly Jam happens this coming Friday through Sunday (July 22-22) in Crawford Bay Park. Crawford Bay (and the east shore of Kootenay Lake in general) is a great place to check out. Consider Starbelly if you are looking for a small, intimate festival experience that's super kid friendly and  a lot of fun. Heck, you can even get tuned up for a season of shredding powder at Whitewater with a little Poi spinning or Capoeira. As is often the case with these festivals, there are too many great bands to mention. A couple headliners: My Son the Hurricane, Steven Fearing, Begonia and Petunia and the Vipers. To learn more about the fest, check out starbelly dot org on the web.

Classic east shore fun.

Contented and occupied little ones. A key ingredient to many a positive fest experience.

The Kaslo Jazz Festival is two weekends after Starbelly, on August 3-5, in beautiful Kaslo, BC. Take the July 27 weekend to rest up and catch both festivals this summer! If you like the music at events and parties put on by Whitewater Ski Resort, chances are good you'll get a kick out of the Kaslo lineup. Know why? Both are put on/curated by local music impresario, Paul Hinrichs.

The Kaslo Festival, pictured up top and below, is a bigger program in general—but definitely not too big. Speaking of lineups, if you aren't  a huge fan of jazz, have no fear; there's a little of that and way more other stuff. Outfits like Shakey Graves, Cave Singers, Buffy Sainte-Marie, Jill Barber and Shovels and Rope will all hit the stage. And yes, if you are obsessed with your pre-Whitewater-season workout, there is yoga and plenty of opportunity to shake your booty on the dance floor. See you out there!
