Perspectives of Ymir

Etymology. Our beloved Ymir Peak looks over us every day as we ski and ride. Has anyone ever wondered what the origins of the word "Ymir" are? Until about 4 minutes ago, I was mistaken. Ymir, to paraphrase from Encyclopedia Britannica, was the first being in Norse mythology—and a giant, by the way. Also known as Aurgelmir, Ymir was created from the drops of water that formed when the ice of Niflheim met the heat of Muspelheim (with me so far?). Ymir was also apparently the father of all the giants; a male and a female grew under his arm, and his legs produced a son with six heads.  Pretty cool, eh? Last little-known-fact: we pronounce it "why-mer" when the correct pronunciation may be "ee-meer."

Ymir is attacked by the brothers Odin, Vili, and Vé in an illustration by Lorenz Frolich, late 19th century.

Points of View. When the viz is good, Ymir Peak seems to be always there, visible from wherever we may be. Here below is a mini series of snaps taken of Ymir Peak, from different points, all in a day

Here's that first view you see driving up. BAM, it hits you in all its sublime majesty.

You can probably recognize this perspective from Silverking.

Lovely shot, through the trees.

With the niece, on a tour. Ymir Peak obscured by cloud.

Peek-a-boo of the peak, taken head-on.

With our season winding down, Ymir Peak may not be looking over us in a few weeks (depending on whether-or-not you are an off-season visitor). Perhaps make a point of looking at Ymir from different perspectives (always an excellent means of learning about anything) and saying thanks for always being there—no matter how you look at it.
