How Deep is Real Deep?
vDid you see the trippy photo of Ymir peak featured on the Whitewater homepage the night of the full moon and lunar eclipse? If you're a sci-fi buff you'll love it, check it out at the end of this post. The photo left me humbled and wondering how deep is deep? What are the numbers? When it comes to deep space I ain't no astrophysicist but I do like to ski. Fortunately Whitewater has been collecting and sharing their data on deep for a number of years now. Let's check it out.
If you are like most locals, you visit the Whitewater site everyday to check the snow report - particularly when a storm cycle comes through. What you may not know, is that all that snow report data is pulled into a snow accumulator: so year-on-year, we can see how much snow actually does accumulate on our blessed slopes. For example the below screenshot from the snow accumulator shows 184cm total snowfall for December 2018 with those high bars indicating the stellar pow days.
Then if you go to the Snow Accumulation History page you can check out how deep the snowpack was last season:
The stats and graphs go back to 2011-12 season. Go have a play and you can make your own assessments on how deep is deep. You may find the deepest day, the deepest month or the deepest year. Better yet you may be reminded of some of those extra special deep days you've had at the resort, like April 2, 2018 when we had 48cm overnight.
Below is the Ymir Peak in deep space photo I mentioned.
