Parting is such sweet sorrow. And a boatload of fun.
Yes, folks. It's that time of the year again. The time when we have to bid adieu to our beloved ski hill for another season. A couple comments about the title of this post: The word "sweet" in the William Shakespeare, Romeo and Juliet, quote refers to the lovers knowing that though they must part ways, they will be together again some day soon. This is the case for we lovers of Whitewater as well--we'll back for more next winter (and perhaps before). In this way, the final weekend may bring with it some sweet sorrow. If it was forever, our parting might bring sour sorrow. And that would not be good.
Next comment on the title--and this is the fun part, with pictures even--this Beach Party Weekend will be a boatload of fun. There are a number of events planned for the day, Sunday. To get the full scoop, click on over here. It'll all be a blast--I always love the Slush Cup. I'm keen on the Summit Chair Closing Ceremony (sniff) and I may even get my face painted.
I took some pictures with my special camera which allows me to shoot in the future (bad joke, these are from last year and taken by a more competent photog than I).
The Slush Cup is always one of my favourites. Here, local ski guide and bon vivant, Joel goes big and old school with a spread eagle--before taking a plunge into ice cold water.
Here's what a successful skim looks like. This li'l ripper may even clear the pond without dunking.
Yes, there will be costumes and much millennial merry-making. Hey...is that the same dude in the penguin costume here and in the chairlift photo up top?
This snap shows off the full Slush Cup spread. Lots of happy, appreciative folks and hardy competitors.
I suggest, if you want minimize your sorrow and make parting more sweet than sour, you should hit the hill this weekend. Have one last poutine, celebrate Whitewater with your friends, neighbours and ski buddies. And take take one last ride on the Summit Chair while it's still a double. See ya the hill. It'll be sweet.
