Sunshiny Weekend Ski touring
Whitewater was a buzz with the CAC Avalanche Awareness Day on Sunday and with the sun high in the sky we decided to take a look around and see what the touring had to offer. On the drive up to the hill we could easily see that Ecstasy, Whales Back, Evening Ridge and White Queen had all been thoroughly skied and then baked by the strengthening southern sun. In Ymir bowl itself you would not have been alone if you thought that Whitewater now had chairlift access the bowl as it has been thoroughly skied. Prospector, West Ymir, Goat Slide were a maze of tracks and even the peak had evidence of the efforts of a few brave souls.
With hopes still high we ventured up the Silver King lift and took a peak-see into 5 mile. The growing hoar frost layer and the sheltered north facing lopes looked appealing but we decided to skin up to the 5 mile / Kutetl ridge in the hopes of finding more goodies on the east slopes into Kutetl. Our hopes were quickly squashed as we crested the ridge and saw that it had been wind blown as bad if not worse than 5 mile itself. With nothing jumping out at us screaming "ski me", we decided to put all our money down on Scob's Knob. While there were tracks-a-plenty we were surprised to find the snow had been preserved better than in the other location, no sun bake and a few fresh turns if you knew where to look.5-mile / Kutetl Ridge
