Whitewater Ski Resort's old school goes New School

VIA SWITZERLAND, AUSTRALIA AND COLORADO'S 'HARVARD OF SKI SCHOOLS', WHITEWATER'S NEW SNOW SCHOOL DIRECTOR SETS RESORT'S SKI AND SNOWBOARD PROGRAM IN A CLASS OF ITS OWN

Whitewater Ski Resort’s highly anticipated Glory Triple Chair isn’t themountain’s only new development heading into the 2010/2011 season.

The resort is going new school, as the kids say, quite literally.

With ski instructing experience gleaned from some of the world’s greatestslopes, in Switzerland, Colorado and all over beautiful B.C., Brent Malyshhas been named Whitewater’s new Snow School Director. And the 28-year-old,CSIA Level 3, Level 4 Candidate has big plans for those aiming to be morepro in the snow — from first timers to fledgling freeriders, tiny tots tosenior hot shots.

“As Whitewater grows now, there’s a clear need for our Snow School to growalong with it,” says Malysh. “We’re no longer just a small locals-onlyfocused ski and snowboard program.”

Malysh has completely revamped Whitewater’s children’s ski and snowboardinstruction programs, made a more enjoyable and easier-to-understandcurriculum for kids, private one-on-one and group lessons, added value tolocals’ season-long programs like the Powder Room and the Board Room, as wellas launched — and we do mean launched! — a great new Freeride Programincluding two well-known local yokels famous for their big mountain prowess.

In fact, this winter in addition to Whitewater’s Racing team, there’ll be anew Whitewater Freeride Team, co-coached by veteran local shredders PeterVelisek and Dano Slater, Big Mountain competitors, judges and ski athleteswho’ve ripped it up at all over the world.

Also new this year, Whitewater Ski Resort is introducing new PowderhoundExperience and Discover Cat and Heli programs.

Malysh’s instructing career is an impressive. After completing his CanadianSki Instructor Association Levels One through Three at Silver Star, B.C. andAustralian’s largest winter resort, Perisher Blue, he accepted a teachingposition with the Swiss Ski and Snowboard School, in the winter of 2002/03,at Flumserberg Resort.

After three seasons there, he enrolled in Selkirk College’s Ski ResortOperations and Management program, then landed a job at the prestigiousBeaver Creek Ski Resort in Colorado in the Adult Privates school.

“Beaver Creek is regarded as probably the world’s best ski school,” Malyshexplains. “The resort bills itself as ‘The Harvard of Ski Schools’ — whichmade me a professor of skiing,” he smiles.

Despite his brushes with the rich and Hollywood-famous, Malysh, who wasborn in Nelson, couldn’t help but follow his B.C. roots.

After stints at Penticton’s Apex Resort, and Revelstoke, he jumped atWhitewater’s Snow School Director job.

“I decided that being right back in Nelson was where I was meant to be,”says Malysh. “So, here I am.”

And here we go. With over 50 centimetres of snow having fallen atWhitewater Ski Resort before Halloween, now’s the time to sign yourfavourite little monster up for early season lessons, register for a limitedspot on the Freeride Team — or trick n’ treat yourself to a private or grouptune-up!
